Wednesday 20th February, 5pm - Taylor C28 Justin Borg Barthet, 'The Challenge of Online Gambling to European Socio-Economic Governance' Abstract: In Schindler the ECJ held that lotteries fall within the meaning of the freedom to provide services for the purposes of the EC Treaty, provided that Member States may derogate from the Treaty in order to protect public order and the interests of consumers. The judgment leaves much room for interpretation regarding the extent to which Member States may erect barriers to online gambling within the EC. On Friday 07 December Ms Eleanor Sharpston, Advocate General of the European Court of Justice, will return to the University of Aberdeen for the second consecutive year. She will deliver a lecture to LL.B. students in European Union Law (Institutions and Judicial System)’. The lecture will address ‘The role of the Advocate General’. All are welcome to attend. Following her recent opinion delivered in Case C-212/06 Government of the French Community and Walloon Government v Flemish Government (the Belgique Francophone case) , Ms Sharpston will also deliver a seminar to postgraduate students and members of staff to continue last year’s discussion regarding citizenship of the European Union. We are winding down the Spring events series in May with a presentation by Fozia Lone titled "Restoration of historical title, State Continuity & Succession: Revisiting the Kashmir Case within International Law." It is sure to be an interesting presentation. Coming next month, the College of Arts and Social Sciences Moving Forward Postgraduate Conference will take place on the 13th and 14th of June. There will be over 20 law presentations at the conference, from researchers as far away as Nigeria, Denmark, Ireland, and a handful from Aberdeen as well. Derek Fincham Wednesday, February 28 Taylor Building A15, 17:00 A Legal and Ethical Evaluation of the dispute between Italy and the Getty Museum over the bronze "Statue of a Victorious Youth", The bronze statue, known as "the Statue of a Victorious Youth" was purchased by the Getty in 1977 for close to $4 million. It has been attributed to the Greek sculptor Lysippos, the 4th century BC sculptor for Alexander the Great. Today, the nearly life-size statue is one of the excellent pieces of the Getty's Greek and Roman collection. It was found in 1964 by fisherman from Fano, somewhere in the Adriatic Sea. The Italian Culture Ministry has made repeated demands for its return, while The Getty maintains the purchase was legitimate.
